Once Removed ...

Once-Removed ... recounts the author’s conflicted journey as a scruple-ridden gay youth through Catholic schools in San José, California; his desperate search for a cure through psychotherapy, subsequent marriage, divorce, single-parenting two sons, and a thirty-three year career in classrooms from Washington to California ...In 1980 his first lover weaned him away from alcohol dependency by showing him his inherent worth as a gay man. Maintaining sobriety meant coming out as a gay man, father, and teacher.

Reviews

Once-Removed ... is a vivid reminder that the lives of gay people and the hard workof the LGBT movement haven't taken place just in San Francisco and New York. American history enthusiasts in particular will find much of interest in Schmidt's mapping of an individual gay life through the last three-quarters of the 20th century.

Once-Removed ... is a courageous, eloquently written reflection on coming out:overcoming guilt, shame, internalized homophobia and becoming an advocate forLGBTQ youth. This book will save lives.
